According to MarketWatch.com, the Global Cognitive Radio market in 2019 was $3.7 billion and is expected to reach $7 billion by 2026.
The market leaders are BAE Systems followed by Raytheon and Thales. BAE Systems currently has contracts for cognitive communication systems with the Department of Defense (DOD), US Navy, US Army, and DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency).
A cognitive communication system is similar to a smart radio; it automatically detects the best wireless channels in its vicinity to avoid user interference and congestion. Such a radio automatically detects available channels in the wireless spectrum, then changes its transmission or reception parameters accordingly to allow more concurrent wireless communications in a given spectrum band at one location.21
This study identifies three patents co-assigned to BAE Systems and the US Army related to cognitive communications and also locates an additional set of relevant BAE patents by the same inventors. The seven patents analyzed reference 58 IEEE publications with the two of the top patents citing 18 different IEEE documents.
